Kitchen

The most important piece of advice when remodeling your kitchen is to take your time. Don't rush into decisions. Visit kitchen showrooms, consult with experts, look through books and magazines, and search around on the internet until you know exactly what you want. Kitchen renovations can be quite expensive, especially if you choose to invest in high-quality appliances and finishes, so you want to make sure you do it right the first time.

Older kitchens often suffer from a poor layout, with inefficient shelving, wasted space in corner units, and a shortage of adequate work surfaces. It's not always necessary to knock down walls and increase the floor area of a kitchen to get more usable space - sometimes a more efficient design can make a world of difference.

There are typically three stages to a kitchen renovation:

  1. Preparing the room - removing old kitchen cabinets, stripping old tiles and wallpaper, replacing or re-routing services (electricity, gas, plumbing, drainage, etc), installing or replacing old windows, moving walls, and drywalling.
  2. Installing new kitchen cabinets - nowadays these are often custom prefabricated cabinet units, and can be installed in one or two days.
  3. Finishing the kitchen - once the cabinets are in place, wall tiles, backsplashes, flooring, trim, under-cabinet lighting, overhead light fittings, wallpaper or paint, and appliances can be installed.

Whether you're simply freshening up an existing kitchen or tearing down walls and building a new kitchen from scratch, these articles will help you to design and build your dream kitchen.
