Indoor Wall Fountains
Are you one of those guys that would love to see your home have a face lift yet hate renovations and can't afford to hire a contractor?
I can relate, and I’ve found some solutions.
Even though we are living in a society that seems home makeover crazy, renovating and customizing your home can be intimidating and even scary for some of us. It can be a tough job and you are sure to come across unexpected problems. I can relate. It’s not that I’m lazy or don’t like physical work. On the contrary; I just don’t get along with measuring tapes and table saws.
It’s not that I don’t like a well appointed home, I just hate the work involved, the potential mess, redoing mistakes, and I know very little about it. Even though everybody and their dog are into remodeling these days, I’m convinced I’m not alone in disliking the process.
However, I want to offer some hope to those that can relate with me. There are some very simple, yet super cool things that you can do to modernize your home and change the look and feel of your home without wearing a tool belt or even creating sawdust.
It is amazing what some new art can do for a place. I know when I say art you are probably rolling your eyes, but it doesn’t have to be as boring as it sounds. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so be creative. My in-laws found a great piece that fit their home perfectly at a garage sale for a buck or two, but it really did wonders for their home.
Here’s an idea that is on the cutting edge yet not main stream yet. Indoor wall water fountains are on the cutting edge of upgrades you can do within your main living spaces. These things are amazing; all you do is hang them on a wall like a picture. They are like those water features you would see in a high-end hotel or spa. It’s like the case I make for art. Find a wall mounted waterfall that compliments your décor or creates the desired feel in the room and you will truly have a winner. If you desire the relaxing sights and sounds of cascading water you can also incorporate an indoor fountain into your home in 2 other forms; table top water fountains, or floor standing waterfall / fountains. Both of these forms are more accessory type features and not as dominant as the wall mounted fountain, yet they can have a similar effect for typically less money. The best part about an indoor fountain is that they are relatively new to the mainstream public and you can bet all those home-reno guys down the street don’t have one of these yet.
Lighting plays a huge roll in creating a desired atmosphere, but if you are like me and fear putting a screw driver near electricity there are things called lamps. They’re awesome, all you do is plug them in and voila, it works! Lamps literally come in thousands of shapes, colors and sizes. A tall standing lamp can help fill in a corner and provide ambiance to a room. Many lamps have several brightness settings and even dimmers. Is the light starting to come on for you?
Window coverings also help shape a room. Drapes or curtains are not that tough to replace. Consider the amount of space your windows take up in your home. Simply replacing these window coverings will make a major change to the room.
Rugs also can be easily used to cover a rough section of flooring that really needs to be replaced or just to change the look of the room. Once again, you could replace the floor itself or you can just cover it. Think about it, it’s next to brilliant! Once again your options are endless. There are definitely rugs that will fit any décor or color scheme and provide new atmosphere to your living spaces.
I’ve talked to some who don’t realize that you can buy a ready made bar, and all you need to do is stand it up on the floor. I didn’t realize that you could purchase such a unit. I always figured you needed to build it yourself, but once again it beats sawdust and varnish.
I hate to mention this, but because of it’s simplicity it can’t be ignored. You can paint. Now, I’m not saying you have to paint, but a fresh coat of paint does transform any room or home. Paint is relatively inexpensive and yet it can have a profound and amazing impact in giving any home a face lift. I’m a guy who hates painting but I can’t deny that it’s an option and better than many other renovation ideas. Here’s a cool way of making painting less painful. Don’t paint a large portion of the home at once. Do it in small pieces, one room at a time, this will draw out the pain, but it is much better than feeling that you are living in a kindergarten art project. I have negotiated a deal with my wife. She paints and cleans up and I do whatever other responsibilities she would be neglecting by painting. It works great for us. The other option is to offer a buddy some work in trade. I’d gladly exchange yard work with someone who will paint. I know of guys who have made a similar deal and both secretly feel the other guy is getting the raw end of the deal.
I hope I’ve given all those that feel like you don’t have what it takes to participate in this home-renovation world. A room or even a home can be transformed without hauling out a ton of tools or even getting a sliver. One of the best things is that almost all your ideas and items can be found online. How’s that for convenience? That’s the best part. You can have all this without spending a Saturday touring the city visiting every lumber yard or home décor store.
Although some of you are likely inspired that you can do this, some of you are thinking this will cost a fortune. The truth is, it can, but it doesn’t have to. Take your time, set a budget and stick to it. You also need to consider that you are saving considerably more time than the guy spending every evening on a weekend in his projects while you’re out with the ones you love doing the things you love to do. I think that’s a pretty good deal, don’t you?
